LinkedIn has decided to retire its “Top Voice” badges, a recognition previously awarded to users who contributed to Collaborative Articles. This feature, introduced in March 2023, leveraged AI-generated prompts to spark discussions and encouraged users to share their expertise on various topics, resulting in a notable surge in contributions.
However, starting October 8, 2024, users will no longer earn these badges simply for participating in Collaborative Articles. Those who currently hold a badge will see it expire within 60 days, with all badges officially removed from the platform by December 7, 2024.
The move comes in response to user feedback suggesting that the automatic awarding of badges was undermining the concept of true expertise. LinkedIn recognized that many contributors may not have the necessary qualifications, leading to concerns about the credibility of those recognized as “Top Voices.”
This decision highlights the challenge of maintaining quality standards in AI-driven merit systems, where users often compete for badges without demonstrable expertise. While Collaborative Articles had gained traction—boasting a fourfold increase in contributions by March 2024—this change may diminish user engagement as the incentive to contribute wanes.
Although Collaborative Articles may still serve a purpose, the removal of the “Top Voice” badge signals a shift in how LinkedIn will approach user recognition in the future. As the platform continues to evolve, maintaining a balance between community engagement and quality remains a priority.
